Who Gives A Crap | Tim Baxter on using a profit-for-purpose model to tackle global sanitation
Tim Baxter is Growth Marketing Manager for the ultimate feel-good Australian brand Who Gives A Crap.
Who Gives A Crap not only provides 100% recycled toilet paper but also donates a whopping 50% of its profits to building toilets for those in need.
Who Gives A Crap initially learnt that 2.4 billion people across the world don’t have access to a toilet. That’s roughly 40% of the global population. Poor water and sanitation in the less developed world results in around 289,000 children’s deaths each year from diarrhoea diseases. After learning these horrible stats the team began a crowdfunding campaign in 2012. Co-Founder Simon Griffiths sat on a toilet in our draughty warehouse and refused to move until the campaign had raised enough pre-orders to start production. Luckily for Simon it only took 50 hours to raise over $50,000 (see the video here!).
And so Who Gives A Crap was born with an aim to truly give back. To date they’ve donated a huge 1.8 million dollars to charity, not to mention saved an awful lot of trees, water and energy during their environmentally friendly production and supply model.
What’s more is that the products are also good for humans – all are free of any nasty dye, fragrance or inks. They’re so well liked that they’re now available in the UK and USA.
This little Aussie company is an incredible example of how you can take a boring, everyday product used globally and make a profitable alternative, that also gives back whilst not harming the environment and is even better for the consumer – win win win!
We sat down with Tim to discover how this little Aussie wonder has grown from its crowdfunded routes to the global empire that exists today while maintaining its values and financial success.
