Hustlers at Home featuring Emily Somers.
Welcome to our new series ‘Hustlers at Home’ where we highlight the incredible Hustlers in our community who continue to Hustle whilst working from home. The next 5 weeks, our focus is all about how we can support our community who are working from home with tips, inspiration for their body, mind & business.
A conversation with Emily Somers from Bravery & Co.
What do you do:
We support chicks with cancer by collaborating with artists to create cool headwear. We help cancer warriors reinvent their style, regain their confidence, and navigate the cancer shit-show with the backing of a big online community. We also donate 10% of the scarf profits to cancer research to end this stupid disease.
How do you start your morning?
Mornings are my favourite! They start early now I have a 7 month old. Once he’s dressed (and so are we) we venture for a coffee and a walk along the Yarra. Most days I squeeze in a quick power flow, and I’m trying to get good at setting a daily intention before opening the laptop.
Tea or coffee?
Coffee to start the day and then it’s all about brewing my way through my ever growing tea collection.
What are your top 3 values?
Community
Creativity
Freedom.
How do your values shape your life & work?
When you belong to a community, you have the confidence and support to conquer stuff – especially when that stuff is cancer.
Creativity gives me a buzz and shapes everything I love about Bravery from scarf designs, writing blogs and posts, scarf styling and coming up with ideas to help connect warriors. (If only the finance side could be more like this…)
I run Bravery for freedom – financial freedom, the freedom to pack my laptop and work from wherever I want (Covid permitting) and freedom to dream up the solutions would have helped me 6 years ago.
What does home mean to you?
It’s more a feeling – my heart feels calm and peaceful. A place where I’m unapologetically me.
What do you love doing at home?
I love a home where there’s always music playing in at least one room, my favourite humans are lounged over furniture, barefeet allround and there’s a hum of lovely calm chaos. We’re about to move out of our tiny apartment to a (slightly) bigger place and I can’t wait to create this there.
What book or podcasts are inspiring you right now?
I’m reading ‘You are badass at making money’ by Jen Sincero (hot tip from Owners Collective) having just finished ‘ The Big Leap’ by Gay Hendricks. I always listen to ‘No such thing as a fish’ for funny facts, ‘Ladies we need to talk’ for interesting opinions on topics that matter and recently discovered @behindthebrandpodcast as I was featured on it!
What does your nightly wind down routine look like?
Again it starts with Sid – bath time marks the end of the day. My partner normally cooks dinner while I finish up work and plan out the next day. We then escape somewhere lovely on Netflix, followed by some night time stretches. If I’ve had a particularly hectic day I meditate before sleep.
