How to Start A Movement

“Boring ideas don’t spread,” Seth Godin, Tribes.

It starts with a passing comment in a regular conversation. Nothing life altering, just someone sharing an idea they have within them, with someone else.

But there is something about that idea, that is remarkable and it connects. It was the right words, for the right person at the right time. And they love the idea and the language so much, they then share it with someone else.

Before you know it, a whole room has started to change how they speak. The idea resonated with more than one person and they then shared it again with someone else using the language, because they feel how this new idea is resonating with the rest of the tribe, too. The more the language is used, the more the idea takes on a life of its own.

It doesn’t belong to the original person anymore. The tribe have started to use that idea, and take that language and make it their own. It has the essence of what the original idea was, but it is like a constantly evolving concept, being embodied and changed as it is shared.

And this is the work of the idea that is remarkable – to become its own thing entirely. As the remarkable idea spreads, it gathers a tribe in its path. People want to be near it, they want to use it for their own purposes, they see how it applies to them and they want to keep sharing it as it speaks to the person they are, or the one they want to be.

It may not be the first time this idea was had, or that that particular language was used – but the combination of the right idea, the right words, the right people and the right time, has created a tidal wave of connection and a new way to communicate, that people didn’t know they needed.

How often do we share an idea, but not listen to the response when it resonates?

Could we have started many movements in our businesses, if we had leaned in more and listened when our ideas resonated with the right people at the right time?

Breakin’ it down;

  1. Viral means that many people have connected to an idea, that became its own thing.
  2. Language is part of the virus, we are literally adapting and changing how we speak as we share.
  3. We are starting movements all the time, we just need to lean in and listen when something we say connects and the idea starts to become its own thing…….

So, now we jump in the JUICE! Over to YOU GUYS. This week’s OC CHAT Question is –

What are the ideas you have that might spread if you mentioned them to the right people at the right time with the right words?

Drop in and share your thoughts with your fellow OC tribers on the blog, as we discuss the big and small ideas and how we entrepreneurs can understand the stuff that matters. Boom!
