A conversation with Zoe Scott from The Design Order
Where are you right now?
Sitting in my office, coffee in hand just about to dive into some web development.
Tea or coffee?
I used to be a coffee girl… Like ALL THE WAY, but the older I get the more I just LOVE my tea.
Tell us a bit about what you do at The Design Order?
My business now has two arms to service two different levels of clients.
The Design Order – helps established businesses uplevel their visual branding through thoughtful and strategic design. We create stand out brands and websites for businesses who want to do better, be better and get noticed in the marketplace.
The Design Order Store – helps younger businesses create beautifully designed marketing materials for their business inhouse without the need for a designer. A strong, consistent visual brand is important for every business, no matter at what level and TDOS is the place to help bridge that gap for businesses that dont have the big budgets to work hand in hand with a brand agency.
Why do you do what you do?
I have been a creative type my whole life. I love the beauty and magic that resides in creativity whether through art, music, words or movement and how it brings people together and makes them feel down to their core. Yes, I would make a terrible buddhist monk.
Design was the perfect career for me as it fuses my creative needs with my logical and analytical virgoan mind.
What rituals do you have in place to help you get the most out of your day?
- A cup of hot water or herbal tea, first thing to get my body in motion
- Community breakfast with my family
- Morning meditation
- Morning coffee
- Lunch outside in the sun (if it’s available) with NO phone and normally a bit of barefoot walking in my beautiful buffalo grass
How do you get into flow?
There is no one answer here but 100% a combination of the below
- Walking in nature
- Sleeping
- Doing nothing
- Listening to music
- Reading books
- Watching movies and documentaries
- Learning
- Adventuring
- Being a part of a community
- Spending time with friends
- Meditating
- Enjoying life
What is your favourite thing about running your business?
Ooooh there are too many to count!
I love being my own boss, living my own rules and having more control over what I do, who I work with and how I spend my days.
I love all the networking, personal development and people I get to meet along the way.. I LOVE not having to commute to work. I LOVE feeling pride at knowing I built this… I have made my own pathways and the profits I make are all mine.
What book, podcast & song are you jamming to at the moment?
Currently reading this months edition of Mind, Body Soul + loving the extra puzzle pages in this edition. I have got a Joe Dispenza book ready to read but often just love the brevity and ease of sinking my teeth into a magazine.
Podcasts – are not really my jam. I love listening to them of course but I just don’t make the space for them very often. I AM listening to a great audio book however at the moment which I am loving – The Universe Has You Back – by Gabrielle Bernstein.
And Music – I play music pretty much all day long while I work. Randomly at the moment I have been listening to a fair bit of Soft Jazz in between my usual electro/folk/indie mix
If you could have dinner with 3 people (dead or alive), who would they be & why?
Julia Roberts, Jamie Oliver and my Dad. If we asked him nicely Jamie would be able to cook for us while telling us about his amazing journey from pub cook to international super star chef. Julia Roberts and I would just you, know, chat, as I am sure we are destined to be the best of friends. And my Dad would be there as he died when I was 2 and a half and there is no one I would want to meet and talk to more than him.
What has been your biggest takeaway from High-End Hustlers so far?
Confidence and clarity.
The thing I love the most about The OC is that you guys are creating a new breed of conscious business owners.
Unlike other business schools, profit is not always the primary motive and you help us to think out of the box and look at the legacy we are leaving as well as the money we make.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Living a less busy and more quiet life. I would like to be out of the city, living somewhere peaceful, away from all the hustle and bustle where I am not constantly in a rush. I would like to be working half as much as I am now so I can spend more time with my family, exploring the world and spending more time helping to contribute to the greater good.
Best piece of business advice you have been given?
That’s a juicy question! I dont think I have ever been given one single best piece of business advice. But here is a collection of some of my favourites.
- Always keep watch and be in control of your finances and know what is going on ALL THE TIME.
- There is no limit to what is possible.
- Mindset is 90% of the game.
- Hire for attitude, not for skill.
