Our Featured HEH Alumni of the week is Jess Connor from Poppy & Fern, Byron Bay. A mum of 2 who loves the ocean, and getting out in nature, exploring in her van! Jess has completed both our High End Hustlers program and also our Uplevel. Her business is thriving, and we cannot wait to dive into this conversation with Jess about all things Poppy & Fern!

Where are you right now?
I’m sitting on the couch in my home, listening to the rain. We live around 40 mins from Byron Bay in the bush. I would normally be in the shop on a Monday but I have a little boy with an ear infection #mumlife!

Tea or coffee?
Coffee

Tell us a bit about what you do?
I’m the owner of Poppy & Fern, We are a flower farm and florist located at The Farm Byron Bay. We are a full service florist offering daily flowers, Floral subscriptions, Weddings and event flowers. We pride ourselves on growing and designing with the spray free seasonal flowers and using sustainable floristry techniques.  It is important to us to design beautiful work without creating unnecessary waste or harming the environment. We also love to share our passion and knowledge and host regular flower field tours and workshops.

Why do you do what you do?
I love flowers! I’m still totally in love with them 18 years later. I fall more in love with them everyday.

What rituals do you have in place to help you get the most out of your day?
I love getting up early! 4am normally, I love to sit in silence and drink my coffee before moving into the day. In saying this I also go to bed early to ensure that I still get enough sleep. And Lists! I’m a massive list writer

How do you get into flow?
Getting outside, going for a walk, breathing fresh air, feeling the sunshine on my skin, getting my hands in the dirt. Walking through and working in the flower fields always brings clarity and inspiration.

What is your favourite thing about running your business?
Being in control of the message we send out into the world. Being able to share what I am passionate about and align our business values with my own.

What book, podcast & song are you jamming to at the moment?
I’m a massive podcast junkie and listen to hours and hours a week, I’m currently in love with Unlocking us by Brenè Brown or any podcast with Brenè brown is normally super powerful. We just started a Poppy & Fern Botanical Book Club and the first book is The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart by Holly Ringland, so I’m currently reading that for the second time which I love.

If you could have dinner with 3 people (dead or alive), who would they be & why?
Oprah, Brenè Brown, Meghan Markle…All super powerful women with amazing inspirational stories

What has been your biggest takeaway from High End Hustlers so far?
People like me can create change and build big business!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Growing an abundant amount of beautiful spray free flowers and sending them out into the community. Educating the world on the importance of sustainable floristry and slow flowers. Potentially looking for land to start another Flower Farm in a cool climate. All while still having enough time to enjoy time with my kids and get away on our van adventures.

Best piece of business advice you have been given?
80/20 rule. Don’t hold back momentum by striving for perfection, get it to 80% then put it out in the world. You can always make changes after…
