Generating New Ideas: How to Inspire Innovation and Lead Creative Teams with Nicole Velik

A few years back I spent my birthday crying on the steps of the Opera house.

I was overworked, overwhelmed, and no matter how hard I tried, I seemed to be moving as fast as my Mum’s ‘over 60’s yoga’ class.

Fast forward to this week, and one of my Mastermind members asked me:

Hey, just wondering if you always knew you were going to go far, or if you just thought f*^@ it I’m just gonna do it and see what happens? Were you ever overwhelmed with being bigger and not knowing what to do with it?”
Full circle.

My journey was my own, but also similar to many. So I wanted to share some of my ‘leap’ learning’s along the way.

1. Believe In Yo’self

This is where it all begins. It’s the big mama. The place that if you dig deep and do the work, you will truly open yourself up to a lifetime of possibility.

Scientific research has even repeatedly shown that higher self confidence is positively correlated with starting your own business. Interesting hey…

However most of us have a few pesky limiting beliefs hanging around, usually picked up in some form or another in childhood. The typical suspects usually include: I’m not smart enough, educated enough, I won’t belong, or I might fail. If things aren’t going as well as they should, it’s more than likely one of these bad boys is at play.

Now here’s the thing – we’ve all got them   But blast them out of the ballpark, and the world really becomes your playground. (If these pesky buggers are holding you back shoot me an email and I’ll connect you to my ‘go-to’ guru’s)

2. Be Willing To Fail (like seriously face plant the pavement)

Sometimes it’ll work, and sometimes it won’t, and you’ve got to be willing to face both. If you not prepared to fail, you’ll never move forward – which I affectionately term ‘analysis paralysis’.

To overcome this, there are always two key questions I asked myself before making any big decisions:

1. What’s the worst thing that can happen?
2. Can I handle it?

If the answer is ‘yes’ to number 2, I hit the big green ‘go’ button and never looked back

3. Start Before You’re Ready

If you actually manage to launch without a glitch, you are already 6 months behind where you should be. You see, it’s not the big that eat the small, it’s the fast that eat the slow.

News Flash: ducks only get in a row when they’re babies. When they’re adults, they’re busy flying around. Think about it. Have you ever seen grown ducks all walking in a row….I didn’t think so.

Jump, launch, leap, even hopscotch your way to the start line. It’s happening now. Get amongst it.

4. Work For It

If you’re launching, growing, or leveraging your own gig, you’ve got to be prepared to work harder and smarter than anyone else out there. Period. It’s no secret that it’s a cluttered marketplace, so to make it you need to go the extra mile. Hustle. And if you truly believe in your vision you will. No questions asked.

5. Surround Yourself With Awesomeness

People. Places. Inspiration. Dial in what fires you up, and times by 1000. For me it’s nature, it’s yoga, it’s CrossFit, it’s travel. And I do all of them as much as I can. My rule is at least one thing every day. And I’m picky about who I hang out with. Not because I’m rude (though I do need a lot of time out), but because I only want to spend my time with people who inspire the pants off me, and who I can give the same straight back to. These are the people that believe in my dreams, downright encourage my audaciousness, give me feedback when I need it, and have my back, always.

Surrounding myself with awesomeness keeps me inspired, on purpose, firing on all cylinders, and ready to take on the world.

To be honest, it hasn’t been an easy journey, but certainly an incredibly fulfilling one. I firmly believe that by stepping up to the plate and launching your own gig you’re signing up for a personal development course on steroids. You’ve instantly given the universe a platform to present you with every lesson and learning you never thought you’d need the courage to face.
So I tip my hat to you universe, and I’m ready for more 🙂
