This week, we find out more about resident OCer, Manly Creative Director of Saltwater Collective and Agency Game-Changer, Zoe Scott. She spared a few minutes in between growing a booming biz, hiring more staff in-house and being a mum-on-fire to share how she makes the crazy work, how taking risks was NOT natural to her and she did it anyway and how a few swear words can really help motivate you in the morning!

  1. It’s a sexy word that FEELS BIG, but what does the new breed of “entrepreneur” really mean in your world?

Jumping in and just going for it. Grabbing the bull by the horns and not looking back. And most importantly making work, work for YOU rather than the other way around.

Being a pretty typical Virgo and not being one to normally be a risk taker, leaving my 9-5 job and starting out on my own was probably one of the scariest things I have ever done. I practically ground my teeth to the ground in the process. It has all been worth it however, and I have never looked back and would never want to go back to the corporate slog.

  1. What’s your elevator tweet?

I (well we), in a nutshell help elevate brands to their full potential. With two minds combined we have a solid range of expertise across marketing strategy, creative and digital to help you translate your business ideas into meaningful marketing and design.

Erck. I hate elevator pitching. I normally just tell people I run a creative agency in Manly. Our work and testimonials speak for themselves.

  1. You open your eyes, take a deep breath, what gets you movin’ to meet the sun?

Normally coffee. Ok lets be honest – probably 2 as well as 5 minutes of peace and breathing at the beach. I cant say I have ever been much of a morning person. It takes quite a bit of strength and resolve to get me up and movin’… and groovin. I think in a past life I was severely sleep deprived so in this life waking up in the morning is always a bit of a trial.

  1. WE ARE STALKING YOU {in a loving, totes not creepy way} – what will we see?

This is a very interesting question and would be one that would change from day to day. There would be a lot of work involved of course – designing, making magic on the computer, drawing, researching, typing, emailing all while lapping up some tunes on spotify… That would be the ‘usual’ if you were stalking me on a work day but outside of that you would see much more fun!

A person who loves nature, cycling on my bike, food, good company and good wine. I love the beach and any beach-inspired activity, especially if it involves a yummy picnic and a few beers. And adventuring. I love love love going on a good adventure. Especially if it involves a bit of bush walking and potentially a swim at the end.

  1. You’re a fictional character = who + why?

Oh my goodness. This would totally depend on my mood for the day I reckon. Today I think I would totally channel Daenayrs Targaryen.

Why? Well because she is the ultimate badass chic. Maybe a little too power hungry for me (I totally have NO interest in ruling the 7 kingdoms) but she is empowering, strong willed – ‘don’t take no shit off nobody’ sort of person who has pet dragons who she can FLY. How could you go wrong there? Oh yeah and she can walk through fire and cares somewhat about equality #noslaveshere. She is a legend, men falling at her feet and has a kick-ass body to boot. Shall I go on more? I think you get the idea.

  1. What’s the brick wall challenge you are scalin’ like a ninja right now?

Too many projects and not enough time to keep pushing the business forward. Thank goodness we are in the process of hiring some inhouse help! They couldn’t have come soon enough.

  1. EPIC books + podcasts that have blown the matrix of your mind?

Being a mum means I don’t have enough time to indulge in podcasts and books as I would like to so I cant say I am on the front foot with the newest and greatest here – but hey the last few books that have come my way and have made me pay attention are – Simon Sinek’s – Start With Your Why oh and an old favourite I like to pass around to any emerging entrepreneurs is Lisa Messenger’s Money and Mindfulness. This is a great place to get your head around your worth and value in the big scheme of things so you can get that right from the get go.

  1. What’s your coffee religion and how do you worship?

Soy latte, nice and hot. I worship far too often and pay far too much money to the coffee gods.

  1. Insta quote that has you stroking your white cat + planning world domination?

GET SHIT DONE – Aaron Levvie

It’s on our wall in the office to keep us motivated and keep the momentum up and running. I’ve spent far too much of my life waiting, holding back, procrastinating not doing for whatever reason, so this quote really resonates with me. In the last few years I have realised – there is often never a perfect moment and you can ALWAYS do better but if you try and perfect perfect perfect, nothing ever gets done.

Failing is a big topic of discussion these days and how it is such an important part of growth and moving forward. While you don’t want to set yourself up to fail embracing your mistakes and learning from them is how you create something truly magic. There is no time like the present. Just GET SHIT* DONE.

*Sorry about all the swearing mum.

  1. You get your very own misty, dream sequence in a movie of your life, where 3 people alive or dead come to you like the ghosts of the Christmas past, present, future – who makes the cut?

Hmmmm. Well first and foremost my dad, who passed away when I was 2 and half and who I would LOVE to sit and have a beer with and chew the fat so I could get to know him on my terms.

I would then pick Julia Roberts because I have had a girl crush on her since I knew she existed and would just LOVE to meet her in person. I think we could totally be besties. Maybe go for lunch and sink a few wines together.

And lastly… hmmm… this is tough narrowing all of the awesome people in the world down to 3! Maybe someone to bring a bit of pow to my life and help me unleash the secrets of the world. Gary Vaynerchuk? Oprah? Tony Robbins? Barack Obama? I honestly have no idea!

Over and out. Cheers, Zoe
